Alle weiteren Anknüpfungen sind unsicher. – Abl.: nötig »‹dringend› erforderlich, benötigt, unentbehrlich« (mhd. nœ̄tic, daneben nōtec, ahd. nōtag), dazu nötigen »jemanden gegen seinen Willen zu etwas veranlassen, zu etwas zwingen« (mhd. nōtigen, ahd. nōtigōn). Zus.: Notbehelf »Hilfe in einer Zwangslage, ungenügender Ersatz« (18. Jh.); Notdurft »notwendiger Bedarf; natürliches Bedürfnis« (mhd. nōtdurft, ahd. notduruft, entsprechend got. naudiÞaúrfts; zum 2.
